Causes of Truck Accidents
Semi tractor trailer accidents are caused by a multitude of the big rig’s driver error. One is when the 18 wheeler driver trucker must make a right turn. The truck driver must swing wide left to turn right. Often, they fail to see the passenger vehicle behind or beside their commercial truck. This often causes a serious accident resulting in serious injuries to the driver and passenger occupants of the automobile.
Because of their size and weight, large semi trucks need a much greater stopping desistance than a passenger car. Indeed transport trucks require up to 40 percent more space to stop. Often, the semi driver fails to maintain enough distance between the car in front of them and in an emergency cannot stop in time. A big rig truck causing a rear end collision with a regular vehicle can have devastating consequences to the occupants of the vehicle that was hit in the rear. When a truck turns at high speed they have a tendency to swing into an adjacent lane unexpectedly. This is called being “off track.” Unlike passenger vehicles, transport trucks require up to 40 percent more space to stop. The devastating can be catastrophic when a car, van or SUV is hit from the side or behind with over 10,000 lbs. of metal.
When a fatality occurs in a truck vs. car accident, nearly 80% of the time the innocent drivers and passengers of the vehicle are killed. Likewise, the vast majority of the time those in the passenger vehicle suffer serious and devastating injuries.
In addition to the above, the most common causes of Semi Truck accidents are:
- Fatigue, sleepy or tired driver.
- Driver failing to adhere to rule regulations and driving too long and too many hours without rest.
- Inadequate driver training.
- Overloaded trucks.
- Poorly maintained truck brakes, tires, steering, and other equipment.
- Speeding and other moving violations such as failure to yield the right of way.
- Aggressive driving by the truck driver.
- DUI / DWI of drugs or alcohol.
- Reckless driving and dangerous driving.
- Unsafe or malfunctioning safety systems, reflectors, lights and warning devices.
