The problem with the Swagway
Swagways and the IO Hawk hoverboard are similar to the Segway. Unlike the Segway, the Swagway is advertised as an electronic skate board and the IO Hawk is advertised as a hoverboard. While the Segway is used mostly in industrial and law enforcement settings, the Swagway and IO Hawk are in essence toys. Swagway and IO Hawk accidents can be serious and result in broken bones, spinal cord injuries, head traumas and injuries including concussions, traumatic brain injuries, herrniated discs, accidents with motor vehicles, and even death.
Although advertised as a fun toy, Swagways and the IO Hawk are considered by some to be unusually dangerous. They have a small, unstable 2 wheeled base and operate by self balancing on a pair of self balancing platforms that can work separately or in concert. There is no handle to steady the user. Being unsteady on your feet wobbles the user back and forth. The slightest movement is amplified into Swagway / IO Hawk motion, which can result in disaster. If you move a lot there is a greater propensity to have an accident. The Swagway / IO Hawk goes up to 10 MPH and can be difficult to dismount.
The interior guts of the Swagway / IO Hawk controls velocity, balance and automation through sensors that detect fluctuations in the user’s vehicle position. This determines direction, acceleration, and deceleration. The machine is based on balance, yet due to its small design and trigger point sensitivity is inherently unstable. If the machine halts, and you are already leaning forward, you can easily get thrown off and could end up doing a face-plant. Accidents can also happen when the unit does not act in response to controls or movement of the user.
